Dr. Small earned a medical degree from Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, LA. At Duke University in Durham, NC, he completed medical internship and an ophthalmology residency. He served as professor and director of the Macular Disease Center and Retinal Research Lab, Jules Stein Eye Institute of UCLA and as chairman of the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston. He holds memberships in the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, American Society of Human Genetics, American Society of Retinal Specialists, Macula Society, Retina Society, American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Medical Association and California Ophthalmological Association.
